The camera uses the same sensor as the Phantom 4. It shoots 30 fps in 4k and full 1080p at 96 fps, all with a 12 megapixel camera. The one interesting thing is the filed of view is smaller on the DJI MAVIC than the its predecessor from a 94 degree View to a 78 degree. This will be interesting to see how this affect the shots everyone is used to getting on the MAVIC
DJI is boating an increased range of 4.3 miles on the DJI MAVIC compared to the 3.1 mile range of the Phantom, In addition it provides live streaming to Facebook, YouTube, and Periscope.
This Controller might be the most improved part of the whole package. Its tiny and with all the features and buttons of the old clunky phantom controller. Your phone simply slides in underneath The only downside of this is the lack of support for larger devices such as an Ipad. I know personally I love using the larger screen of the Ipad when Flying my Phantom.
The New MAVIC also has a Phone only mode in which you can fly without the control. While your range will be limited this might be great for certain situations. Either way its a great option to have

A company called Mill has created an insanely cool solution called The Blackbird…
How the Mill Blackbird Works:
First, let’s talk about what exactly the platform does.
It’s essentially an electric car equipped with high-tech sensors and cameras specifically for being filmed in commercials.
The body is fitted with multiple sensors that can be picked up/tracked as it moves, creating the skeleton of a cart, and that one shot can be edited after the filming session to change the color and other details of the car.
Here’s where it gets cool: The Blackbird can adjust its length by 4 feet, and its width by up to 10 inches to exactly mimic the car they are filming a commercial for.
It’s electric engine can be adjusted to mimic the exact vehicle’s characteristics and performance too. And the suspension and wheels can also be changed as mentioned in the video below:
Why is the Mill Blackbird a big deal?
Well, for the auto industry it’s incredible because you can film one take and then put multiple skins onto the commercial. Let’s say you want to test two commercials, one with a white car and another with a blue car. You can do it with one shoot now (and some computer editing after the shoot is done).
And for the rest of us outside of the auto industry, it’s still amazing how quickly this type of technology is being developed. What we’re seeing here is pretty closely related to the cameras and sensors you see used in modern virtual reality gear, and the whole field is advancing incredibly fast.
This platform also means you can get awesome shots of futuristic vehicles that don’t actually exist, hard-to-find vehicles from history, and vehicles that are hard to get on set for a video shoot due to size, weight or cost.. like a tank…

Blockchain: Double-entry bookkeeping and limited liability partnerships don’t sound like “game-changers” today, but when they were introduced centuries ago they fueled commerce, trade, and global economic growth in tremendous ways. The same will be true of Blockchain—a distributed, digital ledger that is best known as the platform upon which Bitcoin was created. The technology has the ability to do more than just disrupt how money is distributed, it has the potential to decentralize the Internet by making it easier and more affordable to verify products, contracts and even transactions among individuals. In a recent edition of The Economist, Blockchain was labeled a “trust machine.” And Santander, the Spanish bank, has estimated Blockchain could save the banking industry $20 billion annually by 2022– which is just a small sample of Blockchain’s vast potential.

Nano-Steel: Call it the “Mighty Mouse” of steel. Modumetal, a Seattle-based startup, has developed a new process that can increase the strength of steel ten-fold and make it more resistant to corrosion. The technology is already being tested in oil fields and, in 2016, with this new technology, automobiles will be made lighter and thus more fuel-efficient, bridges will be built to last longer, and buildings designed to soar to new heights.
Reusable Rockets: The phrase “reduce, recycle and reuse” is no longer just a mantra for environmentalists, in 2016, it may well be the rallying cry for the space industry as well. In November, Blue Origin, the space company backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, became the first company to launch a rocket into space and then successfully re-land it back on earth. Other companies, including SpaceX, United Launch Alliance and Virgin Galactic, are likely to follow suit in the coming year. The implications are profound. In addition to bringing affordable space tourism closer to reality, reusable rockets will dramatically lower the cost of launching satellites. This growing network of satellites will bring high speed internet access to hundreds of millions of people around the globe and help everyone from climate scientists, data analysts and farmers do their jobs better.
Deep Learning: The future is about to get deep, really deep thanks to the extraordinary advances now being made in the field of deep learning. In the simplest terms, deep learning is about making software better. In 2015 alone it has improved computer vision, speech recognition and even cooking. In 2016, thanks in part to significant investments in the field by Google, Facebook and IBM, deep learning will begin contributing profound insights into our understanding of the human genome, and thus, human health.
Superwheat: With all of the angst surrounding gluten, it is easy to forget that wheat still supplies the world with 18 percent of its total caloric intake. The price of supplying all of these calories—in terms of seeds, fertilizers and pesticides—is immense. Now, thanks to innovative researchers and scientists at the Land Institute, a new type of wheat will begin lessening the stress on the world’s farm fields. Kernza, a new superwheat, is a perennial crop meaning it can be grown year-round. More importantly, the crop’s deep and dense root system helps hold the soil in place and prevents erosion; reduces the need for costly and polluting fertilizers and pesticides; and acts as a “carbon sink” by storing massive amounts carbon dioxide. Due to these many positive attributes, a growing number of farmers will begin planting Kernza in the coming new year.
Passive Radiative Cooling: Something that cools down rather than heats up when hit by sunlight might sound counterintuitive but researchers at Stanford University have created a new material that can simultaneously reflect light and radiate heat. The implication of this rather esoteric advance is that in the coming year scores of buildings can begin installing the material on their rooftops, thereby allowing the buildings to cool themselves without air conditioning. In a world concerned with energy usage and carbon emissions, the technology is, pardon the pun, a pretty cool trick that will have an outsized impact on the building, construction and real estate industries.
Antibiotic Dirt: In 2014, in response to research indicating bacteria’s ability to develop resistance to every known antibiotic, Dr. Keiji Fukuda, the Assistant Director for Health Security at the World Health Organization issued a dire warning about a “post-antibiotic” world. The first step toward alleviating this serious and very real danger has been found in dirt. Earlier this year, researchers at Northeastern University used a new microfluidic device to discover a startlingly powerful new antibiotic called teixobactin while soil prospecting in their own backyards. Given that only 1 percent of soil bacteria (which is where a number of past antibiotics have been discovered) has ever been cultured, this suggests that the ability to gain a new foothold in our battle against bacterial resistance in 2016 may be as close as the dirt in your front yard.
But by testing the most extreme conditions, Tesla was able to prove how effective their filtration system really is, and it’s quite impressive!
Your car air filtration system is pretty important.
Air pollution has a significant impact on public health. According to the World Health Organization, it is now considered “the world’s largest single environmental health risk,” with more than three million people dying each year as a result.
So now that you know why it matters, let’s take a look at what Tesla tested and some of the awesome results.
Tesla’s Air Filter System is Better Than Your Car’s…
First, let’s look at what Tesla says about this little-known system:
Inspired by the air filtration systems used in hospitals, clean rooms, and the space industry, we developed a HEPA filtration system capable of stripping the outside air of pollen, bacteria, and pollution before they enter the cabin and systematically scrubbing the air inside the cabin to eliminate any trace of these particles. The end result is a filtration system hundreds of times more efficient than standard automotive filters, capable of providing the driver and her passengers with the best possible cabin air quality no matter what is happening in the environment around them.
So Tesla tested the basics of this filtration system like any car company would. They ran tests in all the places you’d expect, like on the highway in rush hour. And in areas with mold, smog, and all kinds of other nasty stuff you don’t want to breathe when driving.
But they weren’t satisfied there so they decided to take things to the next level…
How Tesla Exposed the Model X to a Simulated Biological Attack
For this test, they used the Model X. They created a controlled environment (pictured below) where they exposed the car to extreme levels of air polution (1,000 µg/m³ of PM2.5 vs. the EPA’s “good” air quality index limit of 12 µg/m³).
If you’re wondering what we’re really measuring, you need to know what PM2.5 is. It’s the most dangerous type of air pollution for humans to breathe. According to the World Health Organization, it is “considered to be the best indicator of the level of health risks from air pollution.”
Los Angeles and Hong Kong reach around 20 µg/m³, while Beijing can get up into the 50’s according to the World Health Organization.
So when we’re talking about putting 1,000 µg/m³ of this type of super-dangerous pollution into a tiny enclosed space with nothing but Tesla’s air filtration system to clean up the mess, this is no small challenge!
The Incredible Results of the Test
They closed the doors, activated the Model X’s Bioweapon Defense Mode just like you would in a panic, and tested the results.
In less than two minutes, the HEPA filtration system scrubbed the air in the Tesla so clean that pollution levels dropped from extremely dangerous to so low they were undetectable by Tesla’s test instruments!
Not impressed yet? Check this out… Tesla goes on to say:
Not only did the vehicle system completely scrub the cabin air, but in the ensuing minutes, it began to vacuum the air outside the car as well, reducing PM2.5 levels by 40%. In other words, Bioweapon Defense Mode is not a marketing statement, it is real. You can literally survive a military grade bio attack by sitting in your car.
That’s pretty amazing to think about and definitely worth an announcement, so we’re glad Tesla emailed us. They’re continuing to test and improve this system as well as many others as they always do. Not only are Tesla cars some of most stylish and sought after, but also some of the safest!
Tires were first created on a commercial level in 1888. We’ve made some changes since then but we still use the same basic shape after all these years.
And really that shape has been used since the earliest wheels invented… stone, wooden wagon wheels, etc. Maybe there’s a better way? Goodyear thinks so!
Earlier this month Goodyear announced a very cool concept designed specifically for autonomous self driving cars (which are closer to being widely available than you may think… there will be millions on the roads by 2020 according to Business Insider)
What’s so great about the spherical tire design?
So what’s this tire concept and what makes it so cool? Goodyear is calling it the Eagle-360. It’s perfectly round on all sides and incorporates magnetic levitation to support the vehicle!
The tires are designed to be 3D printed, and Goodyear says one of benefit of this shape is that more surface area is touching the ground at any given time. That means more control, maneuverability and safety.
It’ll also contribute to a smoother ride, which is always a good thing.
You’re probably thinking, “that’s it?? safer and a little smoother?”
Hold on, it gets better. Each tire can roll in any direction. It’ll allow for 360 degree turning! You can show off to friends, or use it to have a much easier time getting into a tight parking space! Cars can park much closer together if everybody has this technology.
Your car will be supported by magnetic levitation!
We hinted at this earlier and you’re probably curious about exactly what we’re talking about. Don’t worry, here’s the deal…
The 4 tires use a magnetic field to suspend the car above. The softly floats above the wheels. Pretty futuristic right?
But is this far-fetched and unlikely to work?
MagLev technology is already used in existing transportation- trains! So Goodyear is confident it can work. It’s going to result in a quieter and smoother ride, since the passenger compartment will not be physically touching the ground.
How does it all connect and is it safe?
Is the Eagle-360 design safe? Well, it’s just a concept/design at this point. We’d say it’s viable. It’s potentially safe. But testing and fine-tuning are obviously needed. Nothing like this comes out perfect on the first try which is why prototypes and years of testing will probably be needed.
Here’s what we know about how it connects and communicates though, in terms of safety and functionality:
First, sensors inside each tire analyze and measure road conditions. Weather, road surface conditions, etc. A computer system communicates all of this, from each of the Eagle-360 tires, to the car’s main computer AND other cars nearby! So a single computer in your car will be able to make adjustments to keep you safe based on all of this data.
Adding an additional layer of safety is Goodyear’s proprietary tread wear and pressure monitoring. You’ll be notified if something is wrong with any of the tires themselves, and the system can make minor adjustments based on wear and tear to extend the life of the tires too.
Other interesting features
For one, since it’s 3D printed, Goodyear claims that buyers of the Eagle-360 tires will be able to get custom tread specifically for their region. Does your home get snow and ice? Is it hilly or completely flat? Are heavy tropical rainstorms frequent? All of these factors might determine what type of tire tread you wanted printed onto your set.
One more really cool fact- inspired by nature, the tread design mimics brain coral, meaning multi-directional blocks and grooves help maintain steady contact with the road in all conditions. Think of the grooved tire surface as a natural sponge. It is stiff when its surface is dry, and becomes soft when driving in wet conditions to maintain control on slippery roads and avoid hydroplaning (when a thin layer of water forms between the tire and road surface, causing temporary loss of control).
Ever been on a single lane road behind a big truck? You can’t see ANYTHING. If the truck is going slow, you’re tempted to pass but it’s very dangerous. You end up either driving much slower than you want, or inching over the divider line bit by bit, trying to catch a glimpse of what’s ahead. Not the safest method!
Samsung has come up with a brilliant solution to this. They’ve used what they know best- technology, to provide a way for drivers to essentially see through the truck!

Here’s how it all works:
Each of Samsung’s Safety Trucks (not the most creative name, but oh well) has a wireless camera attached to the front.
The camera is connected to a four exterior monitors attached to the rear of the truck. The high quality monitors display an exact image of what’s happening in front of the truck at all times, even at night.
We already discussed one big benefit above: letting drivers know when it’s safe to overtake, or when they should stay in their lane.
There’s another big benefit too though: the screen allows a following driver to see obstacles ahead of the truck. You’re less likely to be caught off-guard by sudden braking if you can see exactly what the truck is seeing! pretty cool benefit.
This makes it useful on multi-lane highways as well. It’s always a benefit to be able to see ahead and be alerted in advance when traffic is slowing or stopping.
The only potential drawback is if the screens become distracting to some drivers. Watching the screen instead of the road could lower the chance of spotting other obstacles- cars changing lanes near you, cars entering or exiting the highway, and so on.
As of the time this article was published, Samsung has created a working prototype and proven that the technology can work. They’re performing further tests and working with governments for permits right now. This could take a while… nothing like this moves fast usually, but we’re excited to see how it goes and potentially see these trucks on the roads in the coming years.
A few commenters on the original Samsung press release pointed out some valid concerns.
The camera view seems pretty low. Wouldn’t it be MUCH easier to see the road ahead if it were mounted higher?
What happens in snow and ice? will the front camera be shielded? and will the screens stay frost-free?

Beginners Guide to Buying Your First Drone:
Type Of Drone
When people think of a drone they often are only thinking of quad-copters (four wings). The truth of the matter is that any flying RC device is considered a drone. This includes helicopters, multi-rotors, fixed-wing planes and of course quad-copters. These all vary in difficulty however the way your drone looks will help decide whether or not you actually use the darn thing! So while performance matters, it’s best to choose something you like the look of too. However, there is a reason quad-copters are so popular especially for beginners. We’ll discuss this in detail soon, but they’re known for being relatively easy to fly and capable of carrying a camera.
When selecting your first drone, size DOES matter. You have to consider what you are hoping to accomplish with your new hobby. Are you looking to just zip around the house and have a bit of fun? Maybe something small and inexpensive like the Hubsan Q4 or Cheerson CX-10 is right for you (both are under $50 on Amazon at the time of posting this). If you are wanting to fly outdoors, then you can look at a wide array of drones across various lines including Hubsan, Syma, Cheerson, DJI, JJRC and much more!
Camera Or No Camera?
Do you need a camera? This is an important question to ask yourself before shopping for a drone. If you don’t plan on using your drone for video or photography, then you can save a LOT of money by choosing a drone’s camera-less counterpart.
If you do opt for a camera, you need to decide how good of a camera you want. If you want 1080p quality be prepared to shell out $500-$1000 on something like a DJI Phantom. If you are only wanting see what you drone sees, and don’t care to much about the quality then you can go for something simple like the Hubsan X4 which can be purchased for around $100, and is still a respectable 720p.
Ease of Use
Sometimes we pick a drone that may be a bit to complicated for us to use. Rather then getting frustrated later it’s better to pick a drone appropriate for your skill level right out of the gate. If you have never flown an RC device before, a quad-copter is the best recommendation. The reason they are the most popular right now is because they are so easy to pick up and learn to use right out of the box.

The price range is huge, and so is the difference between the variety of drones available for purchase in 2016.

You’ve probably heard the term Internet of Things or IoT quite a bit lately. Just like ‘Big Data’ last year, this term is popping up everywhere. But how do you define Internet of Things? What exactly does it mean and why should anyone care?
We’re going to jump right into the topic with a clear and simple definition. Then we’ll give some examples and discuss why it’s relevant.
Internet of Things definition:
The Internet of Things is essentially a term to describe everyday items having built-in network connectivity (usually this just means connecting to your home WiFi). This allows them to communicate with other devices without direct human interaction.
Thinking of products in your own home/apartment is the easiest way to understand and define the Internet of Things.
NEST Thermostat is a good example. It’s a ‘smart’ thermostat that connects to your home WiFi for adjustments, updates, and more. It also connects to your smartphone via an app, so that you can control the settings without any direct interaction with the physical device. This can occur even when you’re not at home, as long as you have your phone with you.
There are a lot of benefits. Forget to turn the heat down before leaving the house? Adjust it from your phone. Want to change the temperature 1 hour before you arrive home? Make the change as you’re leaving work. Or better yet, program NEST to do this every day automatically.
That’s the basic idea. Adding embedded software into everyday household items allows them to communicate with other devices (your smartpone, computer, etc.)

Now that we have the Internet of Things definition out of the way, it’ll be easier to talk about why it matters. Hopefully some of the examples above showed how this technology can be useful in our everyday lives.
Essentially, Internet of Things devices are going to allow us to have more information and control over our lives with less effort. And without needing to be physically present to know what’s going on.
You’ll be able to know what’s happening in your home at all times. On vacation, at the office, etc. It no longer matters.
If you have pets or kids, you’ll be able to keep tabs on them with products like Canary.
Your everyday household items will also be able to learn from your habits and predict what you need (the two products mentioned above, Canary and Nest, both already do this).
When your refrigerator can remind you that it’s out of milk (or even order a new gallon online), it’s going to be pretty convenient.
Connected devices are going to pop up everywhere- tables with flatscreens and charging stations, beds with software to analyze our sleep patterns, etc.
Not everyone will want all of these products in their home, but everyone should be able to find something useful for them. Something to make life easier.
When we went to define Internet of Things, we started in the home because it’s the easiest to relate to. The Internet of Things won’t just change your life at home though.
The reality is that connected devices are already impacting areas like healthcare as well. There are already thermometerson the market the plug directly into your smartphone to transfer/record health data.
You’ve also probably seen some internet connectivity in newer car models. This technology allows for better navigation and safety.
In the future, expect to see more and more products being built with WiFi connectivity and embedded computers.
